Johnston High School Groundbreaking Set for September 8
Golden shovels will dig in to an era of building in the Johnston Community School District
Johnston, Iowa – Hard hats on and golden shovels in hand, Johnston students, administrators, Board of Education members, and Mayor Paula Dierenfeld will break ground at the new Johnston High School site on Monday, September 8 at approximately 5 p.m. The new high school site is located north of 62nd Ave and just west of 100th St.
“It’s a very exciting time in the Johnston Community School District,” said Superintendent Dr. Corey Lunn. “The groundbreaking ceremony is the result of a growing population, the need for expanded student learning environments, and a community that supports quality education. It’s the first step in a series of innovative changes in our district.”
Stahl Construction (Minn.) will serve as the general contractor for the new grades 10-12, 1,800 student capacity high school, estimated for completion in April 2017. FRK Architects + Engineers and Perkins and Will serve as the designers of the building. The contract was awarded to Stahl on August 18 in the amount of $74.64 million. The project scope does not include the fully built-out stadium; the area will be graded and a track and grass field will be put in for the activities and sports that need it for practices.
“We are thrilled to be working on the Johnston High School project with the Johnston Community School District, frk architects + engineers and Perkins & Will,” said Jessie Houlihan Bingen, Stahl Construction’s President. “The education sector is a major focus for Stahl Construction and we are confident that we will deliver an exceptional facility for the community.”
The public and members of the media are invited to the groundbreaking ceremony. Due to a lack of parking at the site, a shuttle service will be offered from the district’s Administrative Resource Center (5608 Merle Hay Road) to the construction site, leaving at 4:30 and 4:45 p.m. A short reception at the Administrative Resource Center will be held immediately following the ceremony. The September 8 board meeting will begin at 6:30 p.m.
