Word-of-the-Month: Commissioning

Commissioning is a crucial element of the final phase in project execution. During this process, a multitude of systems of a building are operated, tested, and through documented verification perform according to the design intent. These rigorous tests are completed and ensure all systems deliver optimal performance for the Owner. Commissioning is a set of criteria throughout all phases of the project; from predesign, design, construction, and operations.

The benefit of commissioning reduces operating and maintenance costs and optimizes energy use.

Fun Fact
The term originally comes from the shipbuilding industry! Just like a construction project, ships move through a series of testing and progress checks. When commissioned, a ship becomes ready for active service – ceremonially, in the Navy a crew runs aboard the ship as the boat “comes alive.”

Stahl is commissioning Urbandale Community School District’s new Olmsted Elementary School in time for the 2021-2022 school year. Systems being transferred to the District’s control include air handlers, piping and control values, and pump motors (pictured above).
