Swenson Civil Engineering Building | new construction
This new, 34,000 SF, two-story teaching / training center houses the University of Minnesota Duluth’s Civil Engineering programs. The facility features six oversized laboratories, reaching two stories in height with full glass walls, a large flume (water flow channel) with heavy volumes of water supplied by recycled run-off from the building’s roof scuppers, and two 15-ton hydraulic cranes lifting large sections of concrete and other structural elements for evaluation and testing. All six labs provide students with hands-on learning experiences.
This is a LEED Gold Certified facility. To achieve this status our team was concerned with five major areas: sustainable sites, water efficiency, energy and atmosphere, materials and resources, and indoor environmental quality. Specific sustainable building elements and measures include a green roof, the use of locally sourced and reused building materials, construction waste management and recycling, and a rain-water reuse system.
